Even though 2025 saw some significant changes to family law in the United Kingdom, solicitors in Bangor may anticipate further amendments in 2026.
One of the most impactful issues during 2025 was the increase in the backlog of cases in the law courts. This has meant that many families have waited months, or continue to wait for years in some cases, for a resolution to their issues.
It is anticipated that in 2026, there will be a continuing increase in the use of Non Court Dispute Resolutions to resolve these delays. These are non-court routes which could include mediation or arbitration, and could mean the speeding up of stuck cases.
Another issue that family law barristers will be expecting is the continuing move to ensure females in cohabiting relationships will be protected if their partner dies or the relationship breaks down. Other matters expected to be examined in 2026 include the removal of the assumption that both parents must be involved in the case of the child in the event of divorce or separation.
Some matters are much more long-term but will still need to be considered in 2026, such as the proposed tax on larger, more expensive houses. This may impact decisions about separating couples and who will be staying in the family home after a divorce or separation.
