The Joint Committee on Human Rights (JCHR) has issued a new report that demands changes to the system for children’s social care.
This report states that change is necessary to improve outcomes for young people who are living in care, as well as those who have left the system. The JCHR argues the current system is failing children who need help because it is too complex. In its report, it also says the mechanisms for children to make complaints need to be enhanced and that more attention should be paid to recent care leavers.
England has roughly 400,000 youngsters in its social care system, while the figure for Wales is more than 7,000. Therefore, family law barristers in North Wales and England are likely to support calls for it to be improved.
The system was recently investigated by the JCHR from a human rights perspective. It has published this report in the wake of its findings.
According to Today’s Family Lawyer, the statement made by the JCHR says:
“The problems with the children’s social care system identified by the Committee stand in the way of children and young people fully enjoying their rights to private and family life, to a safe home, to be free from discrimination and to have their voices heard.”
Among the changes that it wants to see are for the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child to be fully integrated into English law.
