The latest figures show that the number of people in Wales and England who are choosing to get married is in decline.
This finding is based on figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). These show that marriages and civil partnerships make up 51.1% of the total, when it comes to living arrangements. This represents a slight decrease on the findings for 2015, when they accounted for 52.3%. However, marriages or civil partnerships are still the most popular choice among those who are 18 or older.
While those options declined slightly, the number of people choosing to live together rose. Back in 2015, they made up 32.6% of the total, but by last year this had risen to 34.9%. Cohabiting is proving a particularly popular choice among people who are 25 to 34 years of age and those who are 45 to 69 years old.
This increase is in spite of the fact that unmarried couples still have fewer legal rights in terms of inheritance and property. This status makes it vital for such couples to talk to unmarried cohabitation solicitors in North Wales, so that they can make the necessary arrangements.
Terrence Trainor works for Keystone Law. He told Today’s Family Lawyer:
“I expect nuptial and cohabitation agreements to become increasingly familiar parts of relationship planning, particularly as people become more aware that a little clarity at the outset can prevent considerable uncertainty later on.”
