Studies carried out in the second quarter of 2025 reveal that there are far reaching consequences of domestic abuse in the United Kingdom.
Due to the ever changing nature of this matter, domestic violence solicitors should note that on the back of this new report, new questions have been added to the Crime Survey for England and Wales that will be used to collate future domestic violence statistics.
The Office of National Statistics will also use any information from the new questionnaire to develop generalised profiles of domestic abuse. Victims, for instance, can be broadly identified and defined, making legal action against a perpetrator easier. Although this piece of work is not yet completed, it is anticipated that later in 2025, the full details will be published. Statistics pulled from the document show that presently, over 26% of people have suffered from domestic abuse since the age of sixteen, with the majority of these being female. Almost four million individuals overall have experienced this form of abuse in some form or other.
From April 2025, solicitors in North Wales have been able to use the data from the report to develop a picture of the lives of domestic abuse victims. This information can be used by legal experts to better provide effective support for victims in conjunction with the police and domestic abuse charities.
