Although it is generally known that men can be victims of domestic abuse, recent statistics have revealed the shocking growth of incidents when men are at the receiving end of violence and other forms of abuse from their partner.
Some figures put the number at almost five million during the years 2023 and 2024. Family law barristers have encouraged these men to reach out and ask for legal support to deal with this matter.
Although it has been shown that more men are victims of domestic abuse, there is a worryingly small number of victims actually coming forward to report these crimes and to ask for support. Only one man in every twenty being abused has requested help, according to latest figures, leaving the vast majority suffering in silence. A reaction to this has been the organisation of the Supporting Male Victims of Domestic Abuse Day, which took place on November 4, 2025.
Solicitors in North Wales can continue to inform their clients that the Domestic Abuse Act 2021 covers the needs of men, as well as women. They also have the same rights as women in terms of asking for information via Clare’s Law and applying for the likes of non-molestation orders with the support of legal advisors. Access to possible compensation could also be arranged through the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority or CICA.
