Recent changes to how the Office of National Statistics (ONS) records incidents of domestic abuse have revealed higher levels of cases than previously thought.
Domestic violence in North Wales has experienced rising numbers of victims recently, but this new way of recording the crimes has been particularly revealing.
The 2025 figures show that approximately 12 million people have been at the receiving end of some form of domestic abuse. These numbers also revealed that one in three women have been victims, and one in five for men. This is a major increase from previous years, and one that is alarming solicitors in North Wales. Spokespeople for the Office of National Statistics have stated that the increase is in part due to them speaking at length to domestic abuse charities and learning to understand previously hidden crimes and reporting better.
It has been acknowledged, however, that there is still work to be done, and there is still significant under-reporting of domestic abuse incidents. The ONS will continue to improve its systems and work with those who support victims over the coming months and years. Any upcoming government policies designed to protect victims needs to be driven by the most accurate statistics available. As statistics become more precise, the appropriate levels of funding can be allocated and services commissioned to address the problem.
