It is expected that there will be some upcoming changes to a range of family law issues in the UK that could affect a wide-ranging group of people.
Solicitors in North Wales are keeping up to date with any amendments, but it is anticipated that some key areas of development will include matters relating to cohabitating couples and domestic abuse.
It is hoped that the rights of cohabitating couples will be strengthened in line with the legal entitlements of those who are legally married. More protections are anticipated and although these were first discussed formally in 2023, no concrete date for re-examining these has yet been set.
New amendments to the Domestic Abuse Act 2021 have been piloted in some areas of the United Kingdom. These include the use of new Domestic Abuse Protection Orders, that are designed to protect the victims and provide additional powers to the police to compel abusers to attend training courses and to implement exclusion zones to safeguard the injured party. Legal bodies involved are hoping that these initiatives will be rolled out across the rest of the country.
Other matters that family law barristers in North Wales are keeping a close eye on include issues relating to children’s law. There are Pathfinder schemes in selected geographical areas aimed at considering the wishes of the children more and using a wider selection of agencies when mediating and safety planning.
