Family lawyers are warning that the upcoming ban on social media for under-16s might cause unintended issues during family separations.
They have expressed concern that it could become another area of conflict between parents who are separated. Those within the sector have stated that battles among parents over how and when their children should be able to use electronic devices are already on the rise.
The proposed policy would mean a blanket ban on social media for those under 16. The government is stating this will shield them from addiction and harmful material.
One of the professionals who has spoken about the potential impact is Andrew Morris of HCR Law. He told Today’s Family Lawyer:
“Many separated parents already disagree about issues such as screen time, smartphones, and access to social media. What is changing is the wider public and political conversation around children’s online safety.”
He added the ban could lead to disagreements becoming more relevant during court cases. It may be that parents have to resolve the issue with separation solicitors in North Wales at an early stage in the proceedings.
Morris certainly believes this will be the case. He went on to say parents who are splitting up will need to thrash out a strategy and boundaries that both can agree with. He argued straightforward conversations were the way to achieve that.
