Recent statistics have shown that millions of children each year are affected by divorce and separation in the United Kingdom.
It has also been shown that more than half of these youngsters are supported via child maintenance arrangements, usually organised through the courts. Family law barristers in North Wales have also noted that legal cases involving child arrangements can take up to 43 weeks, though it has been known for some cases to last even longer.
Figures have shown that there has been a recent increase in the number of fathers who are becoming lone parents. Other statistics calculated for last year also reveal that almost 40,000 were brought to court to largely discuss child custody arrangements and financial support. During 2025, from April to October, almost 24,000 new cases were brought to the courts to examine, equating to over 36,000 children.
Solicitors in North Wales have recognised that almost 60% of separated families have an agreement for child maintenance payments. Though these have not always been formalised through legal means, many have been sorted informally to help avoid bringing additional stress to the family. Appellate guidelines that have been recently introduced have been used to ensure that both parents have equal access to their child and that custody agreements are less rigid and formal.
