The latest research shows that the number of people using Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Services (CAFCASS) rose during the last year.
This is the finding of figures published by CAFCASS. They show a rise of 7.2% in the number of people using the organisation. CAFCASS handled 3,982 more cases compared with the year before, with demand increasing in both private and public law cases. There was a rise of 8.2% for private cases, while for public law cases demand rose by 4.7%.
What this means is that public demand for the organisation has hit its highest level since early 2021. CAFCASS was created to represent the needs of children during family law disputes. People from the organisation often work alongside professionals like divorce solicitors in North Wales to conduct child safety safeguarding checks and represent children in court.
The figures released by CAFCASS show it was working on 12.6% more cases during March of this year than in the same month for 2025. CAFCASS took on 5,691 new cases during March, which is 259 a day. This is an increase of 12.6% compared with the previous March.
There was also an annual rise of 6.5% in open cases. 18,000 were private law cases, while 11,313 were public law ones. In response to the figures, CAFCASS said that demand for public law support had risen across the year, whereas private law demand rose during the second half of it.
