One of the most interesting proposed changes to Will making in the UK is the lowering of the age when people can legally take steps to employ Will writing solicitors in North Wales.
The Wills Act 1837, which still dictates the laws regarding this document, states that an individual must be 18 or over to make a Will. However, it is anticipated that soon, those aged 16 and 17 can start estate planning.
Several reasons have been cited for the lowering of the age to include younger people in the Will making process. One of these is the acknowledgement that many people aged 17 and 18 have already been deemed to have capacity to make their own decisions on going to work and to make choices on their education, so Will making simply extends this slightly. Action has been taken to allow these changes after many concerns were raised that the estates of those too young to make a Will previously would fall into intestacy.
Many young people in 2025 own considerable assets, and it is seen as necessary to allow them to make their own decisions about what happens to their wealth if they die. Much of the property and money owned by younger people has been inherited from other family members, and legal advisors have recognised that these need safeguarding.
