The year 2025 saw some significant changes to family law, including how divorces are handled in courts.
One of the main impacts this new legislation has on separating couples is the streamlining and simplification of financial settlements. Separation solicitors in North Wales, for example, can now advise their clients who have a net worth of £250,000 and less that their finances can be dealt with much quicker than previously.
Lower-value divorce settlements are now defined as those in which a couple’s combined assets are worth less than a quarter of a million pounds. The completion of a Form A is still required even in these cases, though it can also take up to twenty weeks for the court hearing to take place to manage these finances. During this process, each party will need to complete documentation declaring all of their assets.
It is anticipated that these new changes will enable family law barristers to now help divorcing couples complete their financial settlements and divorces within six months. The courts will also now be able to implement financial orders and enforce them if they are ignored by either party. Other changes to the laws governing divorce implemented this year include adding more weight to pre- and post-nuptial agreements and more legal rights for cohabiting couples.
