“Divorce Day”, which fell on 6 January this year, is a time when applications for divorce increase. Although it is not a formally recognised landmark date, it has been acknowledged by separation solicitors in North Wales as a busier time than normal, and one largely associated with disputes over the Christmas period.
For many couples, the festive season can bring underlying issues to the surface, often due to financial pressures, family tensions or spending more time together than usual.
This surge in numbers notwithstanding, the overall figures relating to divorcing couples show an interesting trend. During the first three months of 2024, divorce rates decreased by approximately six percent when compared to the year before. However, divorce rates across the rest of the year increased noticeably, suggesting that while some couples delayed starting proceedings, others chose to act later in the year, perhaps after attempting reconciliation.
It is estimated that the age of people going through a divorce has also changed. The average age of women is now 45, and for men, it is 47, which is older than previous years. One of the reasons for this is that individuals are now marrying later in life. Longer lifespans and shifting social attitudes have also played a role, with many couples reassessing their relationships in mid-life.
Interestingly, people residing in seaside towns appear to be divorcing in higher numbers compared to those not living in coastal areas. One explanation for this could be the higher number of people of a more mature age living in these areas. These patterns underline the importance of seeking timely legal advice, particularly given that solicitors in North Wales are now advising couples who approach them that the average wait time to start the divorce process this year is approximately 42 weeks.
