MPs call for tech giants to speed up smartphone protections for children

MPs from all major parties have joined forces to demand nudity-blocking protections on smartphones used by children.

The total number of MPs who are backing this campaign is over 100, including Anneliese Dodds, Kim Leadbeater and Sarah Champion. They want Google and Apple to add protections now that would make it impossible for young people to view, create and share nude images using their smartphones. The government has already committed to making this law, but there are concerns the tech firms are dragging their feet.

This is at a time when there are more cases emerging of such images being used for both sexual abuse and blackmailing of children. The NSPCC and Alistair Strathern MP have teamed up on an open letter, which the other MPs have signed.

The government set a deadline of three months for tech firms back in June, but the NSPCC is warning that the situation is urgent. It believes that the police will have recorded 11,400 child sexual abuse incidents since June. Given that estimate, most family law solicitors in North Wales and England will agree on the need for immediate action.

In addition to calling on the companies to speed up the introduction of protections, the letter states that they must be comprehensive. It warns that otherwise abusers will exploit loopholes like private messaging apps to continue their abuse.

Chris Sherwood from the NSPCC said the parliamentary support was welcome.
