New figures released by HMRC show that March brought a rise in house purchase numbers, compared with the month before.
Those figures reveal an increase of 1% in the number of completed transactions during March, in comparison to February. The total number of house purchases that were completed during the third month of this year was 104,070. In February, the total was 102,750. HMRC is also stating that the total for March represented the highest seasonally adjusted total for a single month since March last year.
The figures are for the whole of the UK and they show a property market that has held up well at the start of this year. People are still buying, despite the volatile mortgage market and economy. Those factors make it more important than ever to use conveyancing solicitors in North Wales though, to make sure the property is a safe investment.
When looked at annually, the purchase numbers for March were 41% below those of March 2025. This seems like a steep drop, but the figures for the latter month were inflated by the rush to buy ahead of the April 2025 stamp duty changes.
Estate agent Jeremy Leaf spoke to Mortgage Finance Gazette about the figures:
βOn the ground, we are seeing much the same β buyers and sellers are defying the doom mongers even though most seem to accept mortgage and inflation costs are likely to get worse before they get better.β
