The Society of Licensed Conveyancers (SLC) has indicated its support for government plans to make buying or selling a home easier.
This makes it the second industry body to back those plans, with the Council for Licensed Conveyancers having already done so. However, the backing offered by the SLC is somewhat qualified; as it has pointed out that it needs to see an in-depth roadmap for the reforms. Despite this though, the government will be pleased to see the key organisations for the sector are on board.
Among the changes it has proposed are for important information about a property to be released upfront, digital solutions to be utilised more widely, and for agreements to be legally binding at any earlier point in the transaction process.
The aim is to speed up conveyancing and cut the number of failed transactions. Those are goals that industry bodies, the general public, and solicitors in North Wales can all lend their backing to.
Simon Law is the SLC chairperson. Speaking to Estate Agent Today, he said:
“It is essential that reforms do not simply move complexity from one stage of the transaction to another or create unintended barriers for consumers and significant additional regulatory burdens for conveyancers.”
Avoiding those pitfalls will require thoughtful planning and careful implementation. The SLC has stated it will be happy to work with stakeholders and the government to ensure the reforms serve their intended purpose.
