One of the leading estate agents in the UK has launched a campaign for the conveyancing system to be reformed, with the first step being a petition.
Warren Sanders is a director of the Warwickshire-based company Sanders & Sanders. He has set up a petition calling for major reform of the system and is urging other industry professionals to sign it. He argues that everyone working in the sector is affected by the existing process. This includes surveyors, brokers, estate agents, and conveyancing solicitors in North Wales and England. It also includes those buying a home.
Speaking to The Negotiator, Sanders said:
“The housing market is a vital part of the UK economy, and the current system needs to be faster, clearer and more reliable for everyone involved. The current conveyancing system is widely considered outdated, slow, and inefficient.”
He pointed to the typical timescale for property transactions in the UK. Figures issued by the Government show that the standard time from the initial offer to the completion is roughly 120 days.
Sanders emphasised the argument he is making by comparing this with the 74 days needed to fight the Falklands War. He stated that the glacial pace and delays led to issues such as property gazumping, which could otherwise be avoided.
Among the changes he wants are to make releasing information about properties upfront a mandatory requirement, and to make more of the conveyancing process digital.
