At the end of 2025, the Office of National Statistics released its latest information about domestic abuse in the United Kingdom, with plenty of findings relevant to solicitors in North Wales who continue to deal with clients that have experienced domestic abuse with care and sensitivity.
As a result, senior commissioners have urged the government to give greater consideration to these issues to run parallel with the updates of the Domestic Abuse Act.
Almost 4,000,000 people experienced domestic abuse last year, whilst police services sent over 76,000 referrals to the Crown Prosecution Service relating to domestic abuse. These figures reveal a significant increase from previous years, though the reasons for this are deemed to be complex, but in part, it appears that a better recognition of what constitutes abuse has contributed. Another alarming figure was the rise in young people who are victims of domestic abuse.
One of the other revealing statistics is that 20% of domestic abuse cases were hampered by issues around the availability and recognition of evidence, even if the victim fully complies with all steps of the judicial process. A recommendation resulting from these statistics is that working with legal advisors as soon as possible and keeping all lines of communication open could help to ensure the case will be dealt with in a timelier manner.
