Politicians and industry figures have put their names to an open letter that urges the government to reform Will writing procedures more quickly.
These reforms centre on making Wills that are written using digital services as valid legally as a traditional Will. The government has committed to making this change, but has not provided any timescale for implementation. This open letter is one part of a campaign that is called My Last Wish and that was created by the digital life vault platform SafeKeep. Several prominent figures are among those who have signed the letter.
The MPs who have done so include Ayoub Khan, Matt Bishop and Vera Hobhouse. They have been joined by the likes of SafeKeep founder Andrew Byres, Widowed and Young chief executive Stephanie Patrick, and Accord Legal Services CEO Sarah Williams.
It is a serious issue, because up to 23 million UK residents do not currently have a Will in place. This is despite the availability of Will writing solicitors in North Wales who can assist with every stage of the process.
Not making a Will can lead to dire consequences for any dependents. SafeKeep has stated that over £67 million worth of estate assets was taken by the government in 2025 alone, because of the absence of Wills.
The argument is that making digital Will writing legally binding will help with this problem. This is because it will make it possible to write a Will from home.
